Wild tigers and elephants are still occasionally seen on top of the plateau, which is guarded by a ranger station, the only permanently occupied building in the ghost town that overlooks the Gulf of Thailand. The ghost town boasts a deserted casino, hotel and even Catholic church and was once a thriving entertainment centre created by the French and Khmers back in the 1920′s to take advantage of the very European climate found up here in the clouds. More recently, the casino played a starring role in the Matt Dillon movie City of Ghosts.

Now one of the country’s gambling capitals, the many casinos located on the Thai border are interesting for reasons other than loosing your shirt — some of the best food in town. It has been described by Nick Ray of the Lonely Planet as lacking “any real attractions unless you know something about gem stones or like hanging out with geriatrics responsible for mass murder.”

Only really of interest to tours as the stepping off point for trips into Koh Kong, by far the most difficult of the provinces to traverse.

• Markets A evening spent exploring the city’s nightlife can certainly be an eye-opener. Located almost bang slap in the middle of the country, it is home to Cambodia Expeditions’ base of operations; from here we can get easily to anywhere. Most of the early evening entertainment can be found overlooking the river, where there is a surprising selection of restaurants, from the finest Mexican food in Asia to Ganja-flavoured pizza. Only really of interest to tours as the stepping off point for trips into Koh Kong, by far the most difficult of the provinces to traverse.
